At Bonzai, your privacy matters to us. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use the Bonzai application and related services (collectively, the “Service”). Please read this policy carefully. If you disagree with its terms, please discontinue use of the Service.

Definitions

The following definitions apply throughout this Privacy Policy:

  • Account — a unique account created for You to access our Service.
  • Application — the Bonzai mobile application.
  • Company(referred to as “Bonzai”, “We”, “Us”, or “Our”) — the entity operating the Bonzai Service. Contact: team@bonzai.life.
  • Device — any device that can access the Service, such as a smartphone or tablet.
  • Personal Data — any information that relates to an identified or identifiable individual.
  • Service — the Bonzai Application and related services.
  • Service Provider — any natural or legal person who processes data on behalf of the Company, including third-party AI providers described in Section 3.
  • Usage Data — data collected automatically when you use the Service (e.g., features used, time spent, device type).
  • You — the individual accessing or using the Service.

1. Information We Collect

We collect information you provide directly to us, information collected automatically when you use the Service, and information from third-party sources.

Information You Provide

  • Account information (name, email address, profile photo / selfie)
  • Voice recordings and audio data you provide when using the voice note feature (see Section 3 for details on how audio is processed)
  • Content you create or share within the Service, including text entries and voice transcriptions
  • Communications you send to us or through the Service
  • Preferences and settings you configure

Personal Photos and Selfies

If you choose to add a selfie or profile photo, that image is stored securely on our servers (Google Cloud Storage). Your photo may be sent to Google's Gemini image generation model to create personalized story illustrations that depict your likeness. See Section 3 for full details. Your photo is not stored by Google Gemini after image generation is complete and is never sold to third parties.

Information Collected Automatically

  • Usage data (features used, actions taken, time spent in the Service)
  • Device information (device type, operating system, browser)
  • Log data (IP address, access times, pages viewed)
  • Cookies and similar tracking technologies to maintain your session and preferences

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide, operate, and improve the Service
  • Personalize your experience, including AI-generated stories and content
  • Send you service-related communications and updates
  • Respond to your comments, questions, and support requests
  • Monitor and analyze usage patterns to improve the Service
  • Detect, prevent, and address fraud and abuse
  • Comply with legal obligations

3. Location Data

When you capture a moment, Bonzai can optionally tag it with your precise location. Location access is entirely opt-in and controlled by a toggle in the app (More → Location).

What We Collect

  • Type:Precise location (latitude and longitude coordinates). This is classified as Precise Location by Apple's App Store privacy standards.
  • When: Only at the moment you tap to save a new moment. Location is never accessed in the background.
  • Permission:iOS “When In Use” authorization only (NSLocationWhenInUseUsageDescription). We do not request always-on or background location.
  • Storage: Precise coordinates (latitude and longitude) are stored with the moment in our database and associated with your account.

How Location Is Used

  • Moment tagging: To record where a moment happened so you can remember the place later.
  • Story generation context: When AI providers generate personalized stories from your moments, your precise location coordinates (or a derived place name such as city or neighborhood) may be included as context in the data sent to OpenAI, Google Gemini, and Anthropic. See Section 4 for full details on each provider. Location data is never sent to Deepgram.

Your Control

Location tagging is disabled by default and can be enabled or disabled at any time from More → Location within the app, or by revoking location permission in your device's Settings. Disabling location will not affect any other features of the Service. Location data is not shared publicly or with other users.

4. Voice Recording, Transcription, and AI Processing

Bonzai uses third-party artificial intelligence providers to power core features of the Service. Below we describe each provider, what data is shared, and how consent is obtained. We do not sell your personal data to any AI provider. All data shared with third-party AI services is used solely to provide the Service and is governed by their respective privacy policies and data processing agreements. Each third-party AI provider is contractually required to provide the same or equal protection of your personal data as described in this Privacy Policy and as required by applicable law.

Voice Recording and Transcription (Deepgram)

When you use the voice note feature, the app records audio through your device's microphone and streams it in real time to Deepgram, a third-party speech-to-text provider, for transcription. The following applies:

  • What is sent: Raw audio data is streamed to Deepgram via a secure WebSocket connection for real-time speech-to-text conversion.
  • What is not stored: Audio is processed in real time and is not stored by Bonzai or Deepgram after transcription is complete. Only the resulting text transcript is retained.
  • Consent:Before your first voice recording, the app presents a disclosure modal that explicitly identifies Deepgram as the transcription provider, explains what data is sent, and requires you to tap “I Understand” before recording begins. You may cancel at any time.
  • Recording indicator: A visible waveform animation and microphone icon are displayed at all times while recording is active, clearly indicating that audio capture is in progress.

Content and Story Generation (OpenAI)

Bonzai uses OpenAI to generate personalized stories.

  • What is sent: Text transcripts from your voice notes or typed entries, profile information (such as your first name), and contextual data needed to personalize your experience. No raw audio or photos are sent to OpenAI.
  • Purpose: Generating personalized stories.

Content and Image Generation (Google Gemini)

Bonzai uses Google's Gemini models for content generation and AI-generated imagery.

  • What is sent: Text transcripts, profile information (first name) used to generate personalized stories. For image generation, text-based descriptions derived from your content are sent along with your profile selfie photo so that AI-generated story illustrations can depict your likeness. No raw audio is sent to Google.
  • Selfie / profile photo:If you provide a selfie or profile photo, it may be sent to Google's Gemini image generation model to create personalized story illustrations that resemble you. Your photo is used solely for this purpose and is not stored by Google Gemini after image generation is complete.
  • Purpose: Generating personalized story text and AI-generated illustrations that accompany your stories.

Content and Story Generation (Anthropic)

Bonzai uses Anthropic (Claude) to generate personalized stories and content.

  • What is sent: Text transcripts from your voice notes or typed entries, profile information (such as your first name), and contextual data needed to personalize your experience. No raw audio or photos are sent to Anthropic.
  • Purpose: Generating personalized stories and reflections from your moments.

How We Obtain Your Consent

Before any personal data is sent to third-party AI providers, you are informed and give consent through the following mechanisms: (1) the iOS microphone permission prompt before any audio can be captured; (2) a dedicated AI services disclosure modal that fires before any data leaves the device, which explicitly identifies all four AI providers (Deepgram, OpenAI, Google Gemini, and Anthropic), specifies what data is sent to each (including precise location if enabled), and links to this Privacy Policy — you must tap “I Understand, Continue” to proceed; and (3) acceptance of this Privacy Policy during account creation. You may revoke microphone access at any time through your device's Settings. You may disable location tagging at any time via More → Location in the app.

5. Sharing Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. We may share your information in the following circumstances:

With Service Providers

We share information with service providers who perform services on our behalf, including cloud hosting, analytics, and customer support. All service providers are bound by contractual data protection obligations.

With Third-Party AI Providers

As described in Section 4, we share specific data with Deepgram, OpenAI, Google (Gemini), and Anthropic solely to provide the Service. Each provider is required to provide the same or equal protection of your personal data as stated in this Privacy Policy.

With Other Users

In accordance with your privacy settings and the features you use (e.g., shared stories, friend connections), certain content may be visible to other users.

Business Transactions

If the Company is involved in a merger, acquisition, or asset sale, your Personal Data may be transferred. We will provide notice before your Personal Data is transferred and becomes subject to a different Privacy Policy.

Law Enforcement

Under certain circumstances, we may be required to disclose your Personal Data if required to do so by law or in response to valid requests by public authorities (e.g., a court or government agency).

Other Legal Requirements

We may disclose your Personal Data in the good faith belief that such action is necessary to: comply with a legal obligation; protect and defend the rights or property of the Company; prevent or investigate possible wrongdoing in connection with the Service; protect the personal safety of users of the Service or the public; or protect against legal liability.

6. Data Retention and Deletion

We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service.

  • Account data (name, email, profile photo, moments, stories) is retained until you request deletion or close your account.
  • Voice audio is never stored — it is discarded immediately after real-time transcription by Deepgram.
  • Selfie photos sent to Google Gemini for image generation are not retained by Google after generation is complete.
  • Usage data is generally retained for a shorter period unless required to improve security or comply with legal obligations.

Requesting Deletion

You may request deletion of your account and all associated personal data at any time by contacting us at team@bonzai.life. We will process your request within 30 days. Some data may be retained for a limited period to comply with legal obligations or resolve disputes.

Revoking Consent

You may revoke microphone access at any time through your device's Settings. Revoking microphone access will prevent voice recording features from functioning, but you may continue using the Service by entering moments as text. To revoke consent for AI data processing more broadly, please contact us at team@bonzai.life.

7. Security

We implement reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information against unauthorized access, loss, or alteration. However, no transmission over the internet or electronic storage method is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security of your data.

8. Children's Privacy

The Service is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, we will take steps to delete that information promptly. If you believe we may have collected such information, please contact us at team@bonzai.life.

9. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your personal information:

  • Access and receive a copy of your data
  • Correct inaccurate or incomplete data
  • Request deletion of your data
  • Restrict or object to certain processing of your data
  • Data portability where technically feasible
  • Opt out of certain communications by following unsubscribe instructions in those messages

10. Cookies and Tracking

We use cookies and similar technologies to authenticate users, remember preferences, and understand how the Service is used. You can control cookie settings through your browser, but disabling certain cookies may affect the functionality of the Service.

11. Third-Party Links

The Service may contain links to third-party websites or services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those third parties. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party services you access through the Service.

12. International Transfers

Your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your own. These countries may have different data protection laws. By using the Service, you consent to the transfer of your information to the United States and other countries where we or our service providers operate.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy periodically. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated policy within the Service or through other communications. Your continued use of the Service after such changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
